Interesting TED talks on parenthood.

I've always been rather cynical regarding the false advertising about the wonders of parenthood.  It was information like this that helped me get past popular culture's parenthood dogma and make a real decision for myself.

Also, this one I found to be riveting. I was fortunate enough not to be raised like this by my parents but this view of what it means to be a man is institutionalized, and did managed to have some impact. It got me thinking about feminism and how any truly effective feminist idea must involve change for both men and women.
Anyway, insomnia sometimes results in good reading/watching material.  Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Luke's First Week

This week has had a bit of drama but we've come through it pretty well.

Luke lost a lot of weight in his first 3 days. Born at 7lb 9oz, he was down to 6lb 7oz on Tuesday.  Well above the 10% weight loss that is typical we were starting to get a worried.  3 lactation consultant visits later Luke weighted in this morning at 7lb 8oz and his Jaundice seems to have completely gone away.  Problem solved, we've managed to perfect this parenthood thing.

Credit really goes to my wife, who contrary to popular belief is a rather assertive woman.  When she called on Tuesday morning for an appointment and they tried to defer her to Wednesday she answered with a rather firm "No, I'm coming in today."  At 12pm, over a poor nurses lunch we got some much needed help and advice.  With the weight loss as rapid as it was we probably dodged a fun battle with jaundice.  We both really had no idea how close to a serious problem we were and that visit really helped us dodge a bullet.  I'm now a big believer that if you can afford it, a doula for the birth and immediately after is a good investment.  There is something to be said for having someone experienced with dozens of births around when you're dealing with Kaiser and a vibrant, active, yet starving child.

Since we're not up all night with a hungry infant, we've finally caught up on sleep.  That means Aki managed to take some photos and we've uploaded everything to Smugmug.

Enjoy.
